Rehabilitation of Pike All Age School in Manchester

The Pike All Age School in Manchester got a well needed facelift under the Social Development Commission’s Community Month National Projects for 2011. Perched on a hill overlooking the hilly terrains of Manchester, the community of Pike came to a standstill as volunteers, students, parents and local stakeholders flocked to the school to lend assistance in the rehabilitation of the school on Thursday, November 10, 2011.

The project entailed, painting of the exterior of the school, repairs to the driveway, electrical work in the computer lab and the general beautification of the school. SDC Manchester Parish Manager Mrs. Beverly Boothe said, “The main aim of the project is to improve the relationship with the community and SDC, and to address an immediate need affecting the school.The work donewill play a major role in building community spirit; it will also improve the facility to which community members and children will be comfortable.”

Pike is located in the Northern region of Manchester. There are approximately three hundred and sixty-seven dwellings housing some thirteen hundred and fifty persons. Pike is separated into five districts; they are Mason Run, New road, Muirhead, Spanish Town Road, and Pike proper. The results of the survey suggests that Pike has a youthful population with an average age is 27 years. The age composition of the population shows that approximately 66.5% of the population is in the working group age of 15-64 yearsthis cohort consists of 33.6% females and 32.9% male.

The Pike All Age School Parents Teacher’s Association has been very proactive and instrumental to the success of the project along with the Member of Parliament and the general business community. The Planning Institute of Jamaica PIOJ was also at the project to promote the Vision 2030 Jamaica National Development Plan among residents. PIOJ in conjunction with the Social Development Commission gave brochures, books, pens and other items to the community along with the students of Pike All Age School.
