Community Month National Project -Spanish Town Renewal

Over two hundred volunteers came out to support the first of five national projects undertaken by the Social Development Commission to commemorate Community month. The first project was in the Old Capital of Spanish Town in St. Catherine on Saturday November 5, 2011.

The project dubbed “Spanish Town Renewal” was to clean, re-fashion and beautify selected areas leading in the main town centre of Spanish Town and the business district at large. This also included the de-bushing, painting of curbwalls, pedestrian crossings, murals located on Barrett Street, landscaping (focus on round abouts), restore and build sidewalk, create park in front of the Spanish Town hospital and Health centre.

What is the main aim of the project?

The main aim of Spanish Renewal project is to improve the aesthetics of the thoroughfares leading to Spanish Town along with enhancing the safety of pedestrians with the aim of maintaining sanitation and order in the Spanish Town Development Area.

The main areas for Spanish Renewal Project included :Jose Marti School Round A Bout, Old Harbour Road Round A Bout, Entrance to Sligoville main road, Port Henderson Road, Spanish Town By Pass, Bourke Road, Barrett Street, Emancipation Square, Waiting Shed area at the Spanish Town Hospital.

Spanish Town Development Area is comprised of eighteen (18) communities. The estimated population is 157, 483. It is noted that Spanish Town Central is the single largest community in the Development Area with 41,119 persons with average household size of 3.8 persons per household.

SDC St. Catherine Parish Manager Baldvin Mckenzie said, “ the project was very successful and it would not have been possible without our stakeholders and volunteers who did not leave any stone undone to lend assistance and so, SDC along with the Spanish Town Development Committee are indeed grateful for the assistance.”

The major partners in the project were the Office of the Prime Minister OPM, National Works Agency NWA, National Solid Waste Management Authority NSWMA,The Spanish Town Constabulary Force, Chamber of Commerce, Jamaica Fire Brigade, the St. Catherine Parish Council and the Social Development Commission.
